Winter at Bear Lake: Best Things to Do, from Skiing to Snowmobiling

A little snow makes Bear Lake even more special. Discover peaceful winter landscapes, skiing, snowmobiling, family-friendly adventures, and cozy evenings in the mountains.

Most people know Bear Lake for its turquoise water and summer beaches. But winter brings a different kind of magic. The crowds disappear, the surrounding mountains turn white, and there's a whole new side of Bear Lake waiting to be explored.

Whether you're planning a family ski trip, a snowmobiling adventure with friends, or a quiet weekend away, there's plenty to enjoy in and around Garden City.

And after a day in the snow? Few things beat returning to a warm house, slipping into the hot tub, and enjoying the mountain air.

    1. Hit the Slopes at Beaver Mountain

Approximately 20 minutes from Garden City

If skiing or snowboarding is on your winter wish list, Beaver Mountain is an excellent place to start.

Known locally as The Beav, this family-owned ski resort has been welcoming skiers since 1939. It's refreshingly unpretentious, with beautiful mountain scenery, a relaxed atmosphere, and terrain for beginners through experienced skiers.

Families particularly appreciate its approachable size and traditional ski-mountain feel.

Why we love it: You can spend the day skiing and still be back at BlueBear Lodge in time for a relaxing evening in the hot tub.

    Other ski resorts worth exploring

If you're staying longer or enjoy discovering different mountains, northern Utah and southeastern Idaho offer several additional options.

    • Cherry Peak Resort: A family-friendly mountain near Richmond, Utah, with skiing, snowboarding, night skiing, and seasonal snow tubing.

    • Nordic Valley: A relaxed resort near Eden, Utah, particularly appealing to beginners and families.

    • Powder Mountain: Known for its expansive terrain and powder skiing.

    • Snowbasin Resort: A larger ski destination with impressive mountain facilities and varied terrain.

    • Pebble Creek: An Idaho favorite for experienced skiers who enjoy steeper runs.

    • Pomerelle Mountain Resort: A smaller, friendly Idaho resort with a laid-back atmosphere.

    • Kelly Canyon: Another East Idaho option for family skiing and winter outings.

These are better suited to longer day trips, so check driving conditions and resort schedules before setting off.

    2. Explore the Mountains by Snowmobile

One of Bear Lake's most exciting winter adventures

There's something unforgettable about exploring snow-covered mountain trails, surrounded by evergreens, open meadows, and beautiful winter views.

The Bear Lake Valley and surrounding mountains offer extensive snowmobiling opportunities, from groomed routes to challenging backcountry terrain.

BlueBear Lodge is especially convenient for guests bringing their own snowmobiles, with direct access to nearby riding routes when conditions and seasonal regulations permit.

Where to go snowmobiling near Bear Lake

    Beaver Mountain and Logan Canyon

A popular area for scenic mountain riding, with forested landscapes and access to established winter trail networks. It's a good starting point for visitors who want to combine snowmobiling with a ski vacation.

    Bloomington Canyon, Idaho

Located on the Idaho side of Bear Lake, this mountain area offers beautiful scenery and winter riding opportunities, depending on snowpack, access, and trail regulations.

Paris Canyon and the Montpelier Mountains

For riders looking to explore farther, the mountains around Paris and Montpelier offer more extensive terrain. These areas are especially appealing to experienced snowmobilers familiar with mountain conditions.

    Monte Cristo

A well-known northern Utah snowmobiling destination with expansive winter terrain. It's a longer excursion but an appealing option for a dedicated riding day.

    Don't have your own snowmobile?

Several local outfitters offer winter rentals.

Beaver Creek Lodge, in Logan Canyon, offers snowmobile rentals and guided riding experiences. It's a convenient option if you'd rather explore with someone who knows the local trails.

Epic Recreation, in Garden City, offers seasonal snowmobile rentals as well as other winter equipment.

For first-time riders, a guided trip can be a wonderful introduction.

A little extra for our guests!

Mention BlueBear when booking your rental at these outfitters and enjoy 15% off. Just a special perk we've arranged for our guests, we don't receive any commission.

Winter riding depends on snow conditions, trail openings, and local regulations. Always check current access and avalanche conditions before your trip.

    3. Go Sledding or Snow Tubing

Simple winter fun for the whole family

Not every winter adventure needs skis or a snowmobile. Sometimes all you need is a sled and a snowy hill.

The Bear Lake area offers several possibilities for family snow play, although natural sledding locations depend heavily on snowfall and safe access.

    Places to explore

    Garden City

After a good snowfall, there may be opportunities for local snow play around town. Choose designated or otherwise permitted areas well away from roads, vehicles, and private property.

    The Sinks in Logan Canyon

One of the best-known snow-play areas in the region. When conditions are suitable, families head here for tubing and sledding in a beautiful mountain setting.

    Beaver Mountain area

Higher elevations often receive more snowfall than Garden City, making the surrounding mountain area worth considering for winter scenery and snow play. Confirm that your chosen location permits sledding.

    Cherry Peak Snow Tubing

For families who prefer organized tubing, Cherry Peak offers seasonal tubing sessions with advance reservations.

For a longer outing, the Logan and Cache Valley area also has parks and recreational spaces where sledding may be possible after fresh snow.

Our tip: Bring extra gloves, warm socks, and a thermos of hot chocolate. Snow days have a way of lasting longer than expected!

    4. Discover Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing

    For a quieter winter adventure

If you love being outdoors but prefer a slower pace, snowshoeing is a wonderful way to experience the mountains around Bear Lake.

Snow-covered trails, quiet forests, and beautiful winter views make this one of the most peaceful ways to explore the area.

    Our favorite areas to consider

    Logan Canyon

A wonderful destination for winter walks, snowshoeing, and Nordic exploration. Trail options vary from relatively gentle routes to more demanding mountain terrain.

Beaver Mountain and Beaver Creek area

The surrounding forest and winter trail network offer possibilities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Check which routes are designated and maintained for nonmotorized use.

    The Sinks

An appealing area for winter scenery and shorter outings when access and conditions are suitable.

    Tony Grove

A beautiful alpine destination surrounded by forested mountains. Winter access generally requires traveling from lower-elevation parking areas rather than driving to the lake.

    Franklin Basin

Known for mountain scenery and winter touring opportunities, with conditions that can appeal to more experienced visitors.

    Cache Valley

For guests seeking a gentler introduction, Nordic facilities and accessible winter routes around Cache Valley may offer a more approachable alternative to backcountry exploration.

More experienced Nordic skiers can also explore touring opportunities around Providence Canyon, Pebble Creek, and other mountain areas when routes and conditions permit.

Some of these destinations involve ungroomed terrain, avalanche exposure, or seasonal road closures. Choose routes appropriate to your experience and check local conditions first.

    5. Take a Winter Sleigh Ride to See Elk

    Hardware Wildlife Management Area

Looking for something a little different?

A winter visit to Hardware Wildlife Management Area, formerly known as Hardware Ranch, is a memorable outing for families and wildlife lovers.

During the winter, large herds of elk gather in the valley. On scheduled days, horse-drawn sleigh or wagon rides give visitors the chance to see these magnificent animals up close.

It's a wonderful experience for children and adults alike, and a lovely change of pace from skiing or snowmobiling.

The wildlife area is reached via Blacksmith Fork Canyon, so allow time for the drive and check current operating dates.

    6. Experience Bear Lake's Famous Cisco Run

A uniquely Bear Lake winter tradition

Did you know that Bear Lake is home to fish species found nowhere else in the world?

Every winter, typically during January or February, the Bonneville Cisco returns to shallow water to spawn.

This unusual event attracts anglers who gather along the shoreline to catch the fish, often using dip nets.

Even if fishing isn't your thing, it's a fascinating local tradition and a chance to experience something unique to Bear Lake.

The annual Bear Lake Monster Winterfest also brings seasonal activities and celebrations to the area.

Check current fishing regulations, event dates, and conditions before visiting.

    7. Enjoy the Little Things About Winter

Some of our favorite winter activities don't require reservations, special equipment, or even leaving the house.

Make a day of simple winter fun

Go looking for animal tracks. After fresh snow, see whether you can spot the footprints of rabbits, deer, birds, or other wildlife. It's an easy activity to enjoy with children.

Try freezing bubbles. On a sufficiently cold, calm day, blowing soap bubbles outdoors can produce beautiful ice-crystal patterns. Kids love experimenting to see what happens.

Watch the stars. Clear winter nights around Bear Lake can offer spectacular views of the night sky. Bundle up, step outside, and take a few minutes to look up.

Enjoy the winter shoreline. Bear Lake is beautiful when it's quiet. Take a walk, photograph the mountains, or simply enjoy the peaceful views across the water.

Warm up in the hot tub. After a day of outdoor adventures, there's nothing quite like relaxing in warm water while the cold mountain air surrounds you.

Sometimes the best part of a winter getaway is having nowhere you need to be.

    8. Make BlueBear Lodge Your Winter Home Base

Whether your perfect winter day means skiing, snowmobiling, sledding with the kids, or simply enjoying a quiet weekend away, BlueBear Lodge is a welcoming place to come back to.

Ideally located for winter adventures, our six-bedroom retreat is just 20 minutes from Beaver Mountain Ski Resort, close to the snowy landscapes of the Sinks, and only minutes from Garden City's shops, restaurants, and local attractions.

After a day outdoors, warm up in the private hot tub, enjoy beautiful views over Bear Lake, or gather around the table for a cozy evening together.

With room for up to 12 guests, plenty of space to relax, and a pet-friendly welcome, BlueBear Lodge makes it easy to bring everyone along, including your pups.

Winter at Bear Lake is worth discovering.

Come for the snowy mountain adventures. Stay for the quiet evenings, the beautiful views, and the simple pleasure of having everyone together.
